But before blasting off into cyberspace and the world of online membership business, there are a few more things you\u2019ll need to square away before liftoff.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Access_Levels\"><\/span>Access Levels<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Have you determined how much and how long members will have access to your content? Access levels are linked to the payment structure of your site. You can choose membership levels and content access by offering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Recurring payments:<\/b> made monthly or quarterly; when payments aren\u2019t made, access to content is denied.<\/li>\n<li><b>Lifetime payment:<\/b> members pay a one-time fee to gain access to the content as long as it\u2019s available.<\/li>\n<li><b>Fixed-term access:<\/b> access to content is granted for a certain amount of time with a one-time payment, usually for a year.<\/li>\n<li><b>Pay-as-you-go access:<\/b> access to content is given each time a payment is made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having membership levels is a good way to allow customers to try your product. They can start small by purchasing access on a pay-as-you-go level; then, if they find your content valuable, you can offer them the opportunity\u2014and maybe include an exclusive perk!\u2014to move up a membership level. Additionally, levels give you a way to down-sell a customer if they want to cancel their subscription. You can offer them a lower membership level and lower price so they can still have access to your content.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pricing_Your_Memberships\"><\/span>Pricing Your Memberships<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are some basic guidelines to consider as you price your membership levels. Take a look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Competitors.<\/b> What are they charging? What are they offering for that price? How does your product compare?<\/li>\n<li><b>Product\u2019s value.<\/b> What are your members going to gain from your content and product?<\/li>\n<li><b>Support access.<\/b> Part of the value of your membership site is that members gain access to you\u2014and your expertise\u2014in various forms (email, <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/go\/livechat\" title=\"Livechat Affiliate Link\" class=\"pretty-link-keyword\"rel=\"nofollow \" target=\"_blank\">live chat<\/a>, group discussions, etc.). If you offer hands-on support, you can generally charge more.<\/li>\n<li><b>Marketplace.<\/b> Do you want to be an exclusive, high-end option, or do you want to be more accessible and affordable?<\/li>\n<li><b>Current audience.<\/b> Send out a quick survey to see how much they are willing to pay and base your price on their feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After you\u2019ve conducted your research, it\u2019s time to crunch some numbers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much are you hoping to earn?<\/li>\n<li>How many members would you like to have, and how much do you need to charge to earn the number in the above bullet?<\/li>\n<li>How much is running the membership site going to cost you\u2014factoring in expenses, such as marketing and content creation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few final thoughts on pricing: make sure that when you\u2019re determining what your profit margin is you take into account the differing membership tiers. If you\u2019re going to have several access levels, you\u2019ll want to determine how many top memberships versus entry-level memberships you\u2019ll need in order to reach your desired income. Here\u2019s a quick check-off list of things to do before you set sail so you don\u2019t encounter any rough waters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build a buzz. Well before the launch date, make sure you\u2019ve told your current audience that something new is coming. If you want the traffic, you need to let them know where to go. Here are some ways you can announce your big news:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>in newsletters<\/li>\n<li>on your blog<\/li>\n<li>in an exclusive podcast<\/li>\n<li>on your social media platforms<\/li>\n<li>as a guest blogger on your colleagues\u2019 sites (ask permission, of course, and make sure it\u2019s a relevant site!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure you\u2019ve tested your site. It just won\u2019t do\u2014either for building trust or gaining memberships\u2014to have broken links or other errors on your site the first day.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you are technologically ready\u2014that your <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/go\/wpe\/pricing\" title=\"WPengine Affiliate Link\" class=\"pretty-link-keyword\"rel=\"nofollow \" target=\"_blank\">web host<\/a> knows there\u2019ll be additional traffic, that your payment processor knows to expect a spike in payments (fingers crossed!), and that you have expert technical support on standby in case unexpected storms arise.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage prelaunch sign-ups by offering early-bird pricing and allow them to help you advertise.<\/li>\n<li>Invite your audience to your launch day by making it an online social event.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>And . . . launch!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Running_Your_Membership_Site\"><\/span>Running Your Membership Site<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ve done it! You built it and they came. And now comes the true test of your site\u2014maintaining it, continuously delivering what you\u2019ve promised, retaining memberships, and gaining new members. Here are a few things you can do to keep members enjoying the valuable resource you promised upon their subscription:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Send members a welcome packet. Give them tips\u2014either through a video or infographic or something similar\u2014on how to navigate the site; provide an FAQ list; and consider gifting members with a surprise welcome present.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to deliver valuable content and help members see what they\u2019ve gained and what they\u2019ll get by being a member of your site (i.e., give them a calendar, schedule, or roadmap of the content they\u2019ve received and the content they can expect).<\/li>\n<li>Become immediately involved in the community boards so they know you\u2019re there and also so you know who your members are.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage membership engagement and participation by emailing members who haven\u2019t logged in for a certain amount of time.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to handle cancellations\u2014not everyone will want to stay. It\u2019s important that you try to retain them\u2014perhaps by offering them a lower membership level or trial run\u2014but don\u2019t make it difficult for them to cancel.<\/li>\n<li>Devise plans to attract new members by offering trial memberships, having special new member sales, and joining forces with affiliates who can help you promote your product (and you can help promote theirs!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Running a membership site is a lot of work, but it\u2019s the rewarding kind of work where you build relationships and foster communities while promoting the content and products you love.
