For example, if you want the user to pay you $100 upfront, but then pay you $25 every month after that, you would need to set your Membership Terms like this:<\/p><p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/file-ksVFM57gL6.png\"><\/p><p>\n\t<a class=\"callout dashed\" href=\"#top\">Back to the top<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"payment-plan\">X Number of Payments to Expired or Lifetime Access<\/h2><p>\n\t If you need your membership to only require a set number of recurring payments that is followed by either lifetime access or expired access you can set your Pricing Terms like this using the \u2018Limit Payment Cycles' feature:<\/p><p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/5B8e314f767910fff7e77d7825794625665D_Image25202017-06-292520at2520131042520PM.png\"><\/p><p>\n\t So in the above example, I would like my users to pay me monthly for a year and a half, but then give them lifetime access to this membership's protected content. Simply use different \u2018Interval' rates combined with different \u2018Max # of Payments' and lifetime or expired access, and you will find that you can set just about any limited number of payment type memberships.\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\t<a class=\"callout dashed\" href=\"#top\">Back to the top<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"trial-period-max-payments\">Recurring Membership with a Trial Period and Max Amount of Payments<\/h2><p>\n\t If you create a membership that has both a trial period and a maximum amount of payments, the trial period does not count as one of the payments you have set. In the example below, the member will end up with a total of 13 payments since there is the trial period and also the 12 monthly payments<\/p><p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/file-S6w393vxC5.png\"><\/p><p>\n\t<a class=\"callout dashed\" href=\"#top\">Back to the top<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"one-time-use\">Recurring Membership with a One-time use Trial Period<\/h2><p>\n\t By default, any trial period that you set can be used more than once by the same user if they sign up multiple times to the same membership. If you want to make sure users can only get access to your trial periods once, just use the \u2018Allow Only One Trial' \n\t<em>(this even works if your coupon has an \u2018Override Trial Period' set)<\/em> like this:<\/p><p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/5B60a1376a5cf156efb91c65947e8ecf585D_Image25202017-06-292520at2520145252520PM.png\"><\/p><p>\n\t<a class=\"callout dashed\" href=\"#top\">Back to the top<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"free\">Free Trial Period that Doesn't Require Payment Details<\/h2><p>\n\t This actually can't be accomplished currently with just one membership. This is because in MemberPress, we want your users to have their subscriptions continue uninterrupted after a free trial period if there is going to be a future payment. So, to do this, we ask for payment details (such as a Credit Card number or a PayPal Account) when the user registers \u2013 even though the trial period is free.\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\t No need to worry though, there \n\t<em>is <\/em>a way that you can do this. Just follow these simple steps (<strong>NOTE:<\/strong> this method is limited in the sense that the setup will allow current members to signup to this \u201ctrial membership\u201d once as long as they have no other active memberships. There is no work around for this at this time.):<\/p><ol>\n\t\n<li>Create two Memberships.\n\t\n<ol>\n\t\t\n<li>One that is going to be your \u201cmain membership\u201d.<\/li>\t\t\n<li>One that will act as your \u201ctrial period\u201d.<\/li>\t<\/ol><\/li>\t\n<li>Set the terms of each membership according to your needs.<\/li>\t\n<li>Set Permissions for each membership to restrict use and create an appropriate path for subscribers.\n\t\n<ol>\n\t\t\n<li>For the \u201ctrial period\u201d type membership, ensure that the \u201cAllow users to create multiple, active subscriptions to this membership\u201d if visible. Then,\u00a0set two <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.memberpress.com\/article\/189-membership-options-overview#permissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Permission<\/a>s\n\t\t\n<ol>\n\t\t\t\n<li> First, set to \u2018Guests', this will limit sign ups to people who don't have an account or are not logged in. <em>(Note: They can't sign up with the same email twice.)<\/em>Note: The permissions below and a membership group will prevent members from signing up if they already have had the free trial before.\n\t\t\t\n<ol>\n\t\t\t\t\n<li>Alternatively, you can set this one to \u2018Guest', this will limit sign ups to people who don't have an account or are not logged in. (They can't sign up with the same email twice.)\u00a0<\/li>\t\t\t<\/ol><\/li>\t\t\t\n<li>Second, set to \u2018Members who currently have NOT\u00a0subscribed to this membership before'. This will prevent users from signing up to your \u201ctrial period\u201d over and over again.<\/li>\t\t\t\n<li>(Optional) You can set a third permission to \u2018Members who currently have no active subscriptions' This will prevent active members from signing up to the free trial. But may not be necessary if you use a group as mentioned in #4 below.\u00a0<\/li>\t\t<\/ol><\/li>\t\t\n<li>(Optional) If you want users to first sign up to your \u201ctrial period\u201d before signing up to your \u201cmain membership\u201d then set a permission in the\u00a0\u201cmain membership\u201d of \u2018Members who currently have [filled-in-with-your-\u201ctrial period\u201d-membership-name]'.\u00a0<ol><li>Add a second permission of \u2018Members who had\u00a0[filled-in-with-your-\u201ctrial period\u201d-membership-name]'.Put the memberships in a group. Putting your free trial membership in a group will prevent users from having an active membership on more than one membership in that group. (If you have upgrade path enabled). We recommend using the membership groups in this situation. But it is not required.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><p>\n\t With that, you will be all set! Here is an example of this with a 7 day \u201cfree trial\u201d period membership (on the left) and \u201cmain membership\u201d (on the right) with associated permission settings (click on the image to see it larger):<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n\t<td>\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/file-oim91OKJ25.png\">\n\t\t<h2 id=\"trial-one-time\" style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><\/h2>\n\t<\/td>\n\t<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/file-cJndQr9SJL.png\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<h2 id=\"trial-one-time\" style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><\/h2>\n\t<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><div style=\"clear:both;\">\n<\/div><h4>Encouraging User's to Upgrade to Paid Membership<\/h4><p>\n\t With this free trial period case example, you may want to encourage your users to signup to one of your paid memberships. This can easily be done with our \n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/docs\/creating-reminders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminders<\/a>. You can follow these steps:\u00a0<\/p><ol>\n\t\n<li>Go to your WordPress Dashboard > MemberPress > Reminders page.\u00a0<\/li>\t\n<li>Click the <em>Add New<\/em>\u00a0button.\u00a0<\/li>\t\n<li>Using the drop down options, create your reminder trigger. If your free trial period is a lifetime type trial period, then you should use the <em>After Member Signs Up<\/em>\u00a0reminder type, otherwise, we recommend using the <em>Before <\/em>or <em>After<\/em>\u00a0<em>Subscription Expires<\/em>\u00a0reminder types.\u00a0<\/li>\t\n<li>Click the <em>Edit <\/em>button that is to the right of the\u00a0<em>Send [reminder-type-here] Reminder Email<\/em> <em>to User<\/em> option.\u00a0<\/li>\t\n<li>In the editor, edit the reminder to include your offer or encouragement that the user upgrade. Include a <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/docs\/linking-to-your-registration-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link to your registration page<\/a> or group pricing page. You may even consider adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/docs\/creating-a-coupon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coupon code<\/a> in the email.\u00a0<\/li>\t\n<li>Check the\u00a0<em>Send only for specific Memberships<\/em> option, and select the name of your free trial period membership.
