If you thought the first, you\u2019d be wrong, and we\u2019ll talk about why. But first, why are we discussing blog comments? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t comment on your own blogs\u2014or can you? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, you can. It\u2019s called priming the pump, and businessmen like Ken Krogue, founder of InsideSales and one of the top <em>Forbes<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenkrogue.com\/ken-krogue-forbes-articles\/\"> bloggers<\/a>, use this tactic as a way to encourage others to comment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments should include additional foresight or a story left out of the original article. The purpose of \u201cpriming the pump\u201d is to allow others to see that a comment is already there and that it\u2019s okay for them to add their own thoughts.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-giphy wp-block-embed-giphy\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"rwngVN1HBkCyeZiD4p5T2zFv6x8b3JEIlOKfhmqa9sdWto7PYMS0AucQRGLUX\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/CzbiCJTYOzHTW\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media4.giphy.com\/media\/CzbiCJTYOzHTW\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Send Tom Hanks GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we recommend using this tactic only occasionally in order to avoid seeming overbearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you can do is encourage everyone involved in the creation and blogging of your membership site to comment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other writers and employees can be trained to write comments on each other\u2019s content\u2014comments that engage visitors and elicit reactions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few tips on what blog comments should look like, and you can use them when commenting on others\u2019 articles on your site or responding to your own:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Tips_for_Writing_Engaging_Blog_Comments\"><\/span><strong>7 Tips for Writing Engaging Blog Comments<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Avoid_comments_that_add_nothing\"><\/span><strong>1. Avoid comments that add nothing.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was so funny!\u201d \u201cI loved reading this.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a comment is better than no comment, a comment like this does little to encourage discussion. It\u2019s basic and will probably not garner further conversation once the author of the article says thank you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-giphy wp-block-embed-giphy\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"OXRoVfr9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/filmeditor-mean-girls-movie-3o7aTm5M49vNm4hXi0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/3o7aTm5M49vNm4hXi0\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Mean Girls Nod GIF by filmeditor - Find & Share on GIPHY\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Express appreciation for these sorts of comments but never waste a comment yourself by writing something like this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve asked your employees to participate in blog conversation and they are turning out comments like these, you might consider training them on writing comments that elicit more conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Ask_questions\"><\/span><strong>2. Ask questions.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A sincere question is a great way to elicit conversation. So ask questions, but give a purpose for those questions. Elaborate with a personal story or relate a sincere concern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People love to share what they know with someone who wants answers. Here is an example of a good question asked by another blog author on a Boy Scout blog about the <a href=\"https:\/\/voiceofscouting.org\/fastest-pinewood-derby-car-designs\">Pinewood Derby<\/a>:\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I like the idea of the Pinewood Derby. Making a winning car takes a lot of Dad and Cub leaders time. This makes it difficult for Cubs without a father present. Please reach out to these kids because I am sure your concept of the winning car sets them up to lose. Do Cubs who make their own cars ever win?\u00a0<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her question generated several responses.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Generate_controversy_but_be_polite\"><\/span><strong>3. Generate controversy but be polite.\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Controversy is actually beneficial to your blog. People thrive on it. They feel the need to step in when their opinion is different from yours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But stay away from hot-button political or religious topics, as this can generate damage and feelings of anger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, stick to things that would be unlikely to create offense. This might mean disagreeing with the author or including something not everyone would agree with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Begin by thanking the author and finding common ground. When commenting on others\u2019 articles, you might recommend a strategy you feel worked better than the author\u2019s suggestion, or you might suggest something about the article that could be tweaked. Here is an example from one of our own blog <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/three-wordpress-plugins-youll-absolutely-love\/\">articles<\/a>:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Good article. Personally, I use Bloom over <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/go\/om\/pricing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" title=\"\">OptinMonster<\/a> (haven\u2019t tried it, though). I was just thinking about doing some research about automated backup plugins, but turns out I don\u2019t need to do that now. VaultPress! Give further insight.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a great idea to expand on what\u2019s already in the article. You might explain why the author is correct in a point, or you might give a few additional suggestions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This encourages other users to feel comfortable making suggestions as well. Here\u2019s another example from one of our blog articles regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/the-pros-and-cons-of-offering-trial-periods-on-your-membership-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the pros and cons of free trials<\/a>:\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I use to offer a free trial, but I recently stopped. Now I offer a 7-day trial for a $1.00 that automatically cancels after the 7 days. I realized the free trial was attracting a lot of people without a credit card, debit card, or even PayPal account, so there\u2019s no chance of these people ever joining the paid membership. To eliminate those people from even being on my list, I offer the 7-day trial for $1.00. I literally only implemented this about a week ago, so I\u2019ll let it run for a few more weeks and see how it goes. Respond to others in thoughtful ways.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is your opportunity, as the author of the article, to participate in the conversation in a way that elicits responses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Always <\/em>respond to commenters unless comments are downright cruel or vulgar. Avoid simple thank-you responses. Try to engage the commenter by asking a question or letting them know they can always ask more questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they do ask a question, give a thoughtful, in-depth response. Here\u2019s a great example from Tech Mama (her response even included a link to her most recent blog article, which will help generate more views):\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hi, Larry, You\u2019re right. If you don\u2019t like the idea of smart speakers listening to you, then you shouldn\u2019t have them in your home. Government regulations can take years to implement, so we should take steps now to protect our privacy. Carolyn Nicander Mohr recently published this awesome post..<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderoftech.com\/google-maps-update-helps-guide-you-away-from-natural-disasters\/\">Google Maps Update Helps Guide You Away from Natural Disasters<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Here_are_a_few_more_things_to_avoid\"><\/span><strong>7. Here are a few more things to avoid.\u00a0<\/strong><br><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t write overly long comments. If it\u2019s over a hundred words, chances are it won\u2019t be read. Avoid sounding stiff or robotic. Be real. Always avoid arguing.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWow. You are so amazing, and I think you write great articles.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI liked your first six points, but I didn\u2019t love the seventh because . . .\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which comment is better? Hopefully, you now know! With these suggestions, you can write comments that engage membership visitors. Remember:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stay away from comments that add little to the conversation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask sincere questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write about controversial things\u2014but not too controversial.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share personal stories and insights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expound on what is already there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be responsive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid comments that go on and on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What are some of your favorite comments from your membership site?
