Second, and almost as important, you have to know that your emails are being delivered quickly and reliably to your members\u2019 inboxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all my years in support I\u2019ve seen very few site owners who have given a second thought to how their emails are being sent out, where they\u2019re being sent from, and what potential issues they could come up against by leaving WordPress emails as their default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, the fact that WordPress will almost always be able to send out emails without you having to so much as lift a finger to make it happen is incredible. But there are some potential issues that should be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>The Problem with WordPress Mail<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Without getting too technical here, WordPress (by default) will attempt to send emails by using a local mail\u00a0server when possible. This means 99% of the time your emails are coming from the same webserver your site is hosted on.\u00a0That doesn\u2019t sound so bad, but here are the issues that often get overlooked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Are\u00a0you on a shared hosting server?\u00a0If so, what have other website owners on the server\u00a0done to tarnish its reputation<\/a> with email providers?<\/li>
What history does your server\u2019s IP address have with email block lists<\/a>?<\/li>
Does your\u00a0webhost allow you to customize\u00a0the \u201cFrom\u201d email address and \u201cFrom\u201d name in outgoing emails?<\/li>
Does your webhost put limits on how many emails you can send per day\/month?\u00a0If so, what are those limits? How likely are you to reach them?<\/li>
What is the up-time of the mail server provided by your host and how quickly can\/do they fix issues?<\/li>
What happens to emails that fail to send? Do they get retried \u2014 or just dropped?<\/li>
How many other users are sharing the mail server with you? How fast does the webhost serve up requests?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
There are other issues, but these are\u00a0the most common and are a really good starting point in determining if your email server is going to be reliable or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Consider, for example, that you\u2019ve configured a Reminder email in MemberPress to notify members one week before their credit card expires. Now imagine that you have 800 people (a bit exaggerated, but not unbelievable for a large subscription site) whose credit cards will be expiring at the end of the current month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/iframe><\/div><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>watch >> Memberpress emails overview<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nOn the day that the reminder gets triggered, MemberPress will send out 800 emails throughout the day to these members informing them that they need to update their credit card information.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNow imagine that your <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/go\/wpe\/pricing\" title=\"WPengine Affiliate Link\" class=\"pretty-link-keyword\"rel=\"nofollow \" target=\"_blank\">web host<\/a> limits you to 300 emails per day, and on top of that, they drop any emails into a black hole after you\u2019ve reached that limit. That means 500 people now have no idea that their credit cards\u00a0need to be updated before\u00a0their subscription will lapse!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nOr, what if your mail server was put on a block list for many of the large email providers. How many of those 800 folks would never see\u00a0that email because it\u2019s been marked as spam?<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou should seriously consider these issues if you want to save yourself a lot of customer support and financial headache. This is crucial if you\u2019re running a membership site with something like MemberPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYour members will expect emails with instructions almost immediately after signing up, and they\u2019ll no doubt want to be reminded before their subscription expires or auto-renews. If they don\u2019t get <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/2014\/12\/mastering-automated-email-reminders-in-the-memberpress-plugin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reminded before getting charged<\/a> you can guarantee they\u2019re not going to be happy with you. And it\u2019s never fun to get yelled at, period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/span>There is a Solution!<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nRight now you\u2019re probably thinking, \u201cGreat! Another thing to stress and worry about.\u201d But I have some good news: these issues can be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFirst, you want to install the <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/go\/wpsmtp\/pricing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer sponsored\">WP Mail SMTP<\/a> plugin. It fixes your email deliverability problems by reconfiguring WordPress to use a third-party SMTP provider when sending emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSecond, you\u2019ll need to choose your third-party SMTP providers. Some good ones include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailjet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mailjet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sendgrid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SendGrid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MailGun<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/ses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon SES<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOne great thing about most third party mailing services is that all emails and fail-to-send alerts are logged. If a customer complains about not receiving an email, check the log and see if there was an issue delivering their email. More often than not, the customer simply incorrectly entered their email address when signing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/span>Installing a Third Party Email Service<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nMailGun and Amazon also have free tiers which you can use, but for this installation guide, I will be using SendGrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStep 1 \u2013 Signup For SendGrid<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nHead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sendgrid.com\/user\/signup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/sendgrid.com\/user\/signup<\/a> and create your free account.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStep 2 \u2013 Tell WordPress to send emails via SendGrid<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThis sounds complex, but it\u2019s really easy. I promise. Head to your WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Add New. Now search for \u201cSendGrid\u201d and install the official SendGrid plugin.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAfter installing and activating the plugin, head to your WordPress Dashboard > Settings > SendGrid. Enter your username and <a href=\"https:\/\/memberpress.com\/go\/lastpass\" title=\"Last Pass Affiliate link\" class=\"pretty-link-keyword\"rel=\"nofollow \" target=\"_blank\">password<\/a> for the free SendGrid account you created, choose API method, and save the settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMemberPress will override the \u201cName\u201d and \u201cSending Address\u201d fields under \u201cMail Settings,\u201d so there is no need to fill those out.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThat\u2019s it!
