If you’ve ever started a support group, you know it comes from a place of deep care. Your main goal is simply to create a safe, focused space for people to connect.
For a long time, the most practical way to do that was a Facebook group or a similar social platform. It made perfect sense – it was the “easy button” to get a community off the ground, and it was a great primer paso.
But I’ve been thinking a lot about what happens as that community grows.
Those public platforms have become incredibly loud. That safe space you worked so hard to build now feels jumbled, forced to compete with ads, endless scrolling, and distracting, often negative, public arguments.
It’s hard to foster real connection and vulnerability in a place that feels so chaotic. And it’s not your fault; it’s just the nature of those platforms. They were never designed for this kind of focused, private support.
This is where I want to suggest a better way.
What if you could take all that positive energy and move it into a true home? A private, professional, and quiet space on your own WordPress site, where usted control the experience from top to bottom.
This is what I want to explore with you today. It’s a shift in how we think about building community, and it’s all made possible by a new, fully integrated part of MemberPress called ClubSuite.
I want to show you how ClubSuite can become the new heart of your support group, using its ClubDirectory™ (Directorio de clubes) to help members find each other and ClubCircles™ and ClubConnect™ to give them that truly private, safe space to talk.
What Makes a Successful En línea Support Group?
Let’s quickly talk about what a éxito online support group actually needs to thrive.
From my experience, it’s not about having a million features. It really comes down to three core essentials that are almost impossible to get from that jumbled setup on public social media.
- A Truly Private Space: This is the absolute foundation. Your members debe feel safe. They need to know, without a doubt, that their conversations are 100% private and protected.
This means no public access, no search engine indexing, and no data-mining algorithms. It’s a secure “members-only” environment where vulnerability is protected. - Real, Human Connection: Support comes from other gente, not faceless usernames. A successful group moves beyond a simple, anonymous “member list” and gives people a way to see who else is in the community.
This means having member profiles where people can share who they are, find peers, or look for accountability partners who “get it.” - Safe, Focused Discussions: Finally, you need a space for the actual support to happen. A single, chaotic feed where every topic gets mixed together just doesn’t work.
A great support hub provides organised, moderated spaces for specific topics. This allows for positive, focused conversations, free from the noise, ads, and negativity of the public internet.
A private space, real connection, and safe discussions. That’s the blueprint.
The old model of using a public social media group fails because it breaks all three of these rules. The nuevo model, which I’m about to show you, is how you can finally build this the right way, right on your own site.
How to Start a Membership Site for Support Groups
Okay, so now we know qué makes a successful online support group.
Now, I want to show you the step-by-step process for building a site that delivers on all three. Here is the practical path to bringing that vision to life.
Step 1: Set Up Your Foundation (WordPress + MemberPress)
This is where we build the secure site and set up the “members-only” access.
Before you can build a community, you need a platform that you own and control. This is the most important step for guaranteeing privacy and safety for your members.
Your foundation starts with WordPress. It’s the most popular and flexible platform for building a site that can grow with your community.
By itself, a new WordPress site is public. The crucial change happens when you install our MemberPress plugin. This is the tool that transforms your open site into a secure, private, “members-only” area.
Once you install MemberPress, you’ll do two simple things:
- Create a “Membership": This is the product your members will sign up for. You can name it anything, like “Community Access” or “Support Group Member.” You can make it free or charge a fee for it.
- Set Up “Access Rules”: This is the most important part. You’ll create a simple rule that says, “Only people who have the ‘Community Access’ membership can see these specific pages.” You can apply this rule to your sitio completo or just to the pages where your community will live.
With just those two actions, you’ve created a secure, private foundation. The public can no longer see your protected content, and you are in complete control of who gets in.
Now that your site is secure, we can start adding the community features inside that protected area.
Step 2: Create a Private Member Directory with ClubDirectory™
A support group is all about conexión. The problem is that in a standard private site, your members are all isolated. They have no way of knowing who else is there with them, which can make them feel just as alone as they did before they joined.
We need a way for them to find each other.
This is where a really powerful tool called ClubDirectory™ (Directorio de clubes) comes in. It’s part of a new add-on for MemberPress called ClubSuite™, and it’s designed to solve this exact problem.
In simple terms, ClubDirectory™ (Directorio de clubes) lets you add a professional, searchable member directory right inside the private area of your site.

It’s like a private, internal “phone book” for your community. For support groups it’s ideal. It helps members feel like they’re part of a real community of people, not just subscribers to a website.
Here’s what it allows you to do:
- Enable Member Profiles: Instead of just being an email address, members can create their own profiles with a photo, a bio, and other information. This is so important for building trust and letting people show who they are.
- Help Members Find Each Other: The directory is fully searchable. This is a practical, valuable feature for your members. They can look for an accountability partner, find other members in their same city, or connect with someone who shares a specific goal.
- You Keep Full Control: The best part is that you, as the site owner, control all the privacy settings. You decide what information is shown, who gets to see the directory, and who appears in it.
By adding a directory, you’ve given your members a safe way to connect. Now that they can find each other, we need to give them a safe place to talk.
Step 3: Build Safe Discussion Groups with ClubCircles™
With a directory in place, we’ll now create the actual safe spaces for conversation using moderated, topic-based forums.
In Step 2, we gave members a way to encontrar each other with ClubDirectory™ (Directorio de clubes). Now, we need to give them a safe and organised place to talk to each other.
This brings us to the second part of the ClubSuite add-on, a great tool called ClubCircles™.
It is designed to create private, modern, and easy-to-use discussion forums right inside su MemberPress site.
This is the perfect alternative to a single, chaotic social media feed. Instead of one giant “wall” where every topic gets mixed together, ClubCircles™ lets you create multiple, focused discussion groups.
For a support group, this is ideal. For example, you could easily create separate, private groups for:
- A “Welcome & Introductions” group
- A “Weekly Check-in” group
- A “Seeking Advice” group
- A “Share Your Wins” group
This is where the “safe space” idea really comes to life. Because these discussion groups are built by you en your site, you are in complete control.

Here’s what makes this so effective for a support group:
- You Set the Tone: The tool gives usted the moderation controls to guide the conversation, remove negative posts, and keep the environment positive and supportive.
- It’s Easy for Members: It’s designed to be simple and intuitive. Your members can post updates, reply in threads, and follow topics without the learning curve of a complex, old-school forum.
- It’s Fully Private & Integrated: Porque ClubCircles™ runs inside your MemberPress site, all these conversations are 100% protected and only visible to your logged-in members.
By combining MemberPress (for privacy), ClubDirectory™ (Directorio de clubes) (for connection), and ClubCircles™ (for conversation), you have now built a complete, self-contained community hub.
Step 4: Connect Members One-to-One with ClubConnect™
There’s one more layer of connection that makes a support group really work: the ability for two members to talk privately, just between themselves.
Someone might find a potential accountability partner through the directory, feel inspired by their post in ClubCircles™, and then want to reach out directly.
Without a way to do that privately, that connection just… doesn’t happen. Or worse, it spills into a public channel where it doesn’t belong.
That’s exactly what ClubConnect is built for. It’s the third piece of the ClubSuite™ add-on, and it adds private, one-to-one messaging directly inside your MemberPress site.
For a support group, this is a big deal. Here’s why it matters:
It keeps everything on your site. Without this, members resort to swapping personal phone numbers or moving to a separate app to keep in touch. That breaks the safe, contained environment you’ve worked hard to create. ClubConnect™ keeps those conversations where they belong – inside your protected community.
It gives members real ownership of their connections. Group forums are great for shared support, but some conversations are just more personal.
It adds a more spontaneous dimension to group interactions. People interact differently in forums than in group chats. Forum posts are more composed, generally longer, and often edited. Messages are shorter, sent in the moment, and are more conducive to ongoing interaction.
ClubConnect™ gives members the space to have those exchanges privately, safely, and without leaving your platform.
With ClubConnect™ in place, your community now has a full range of connection options: a directory to find people, group circles to talk together, and private messaging to go deeper. That’s a complete support ecosystem, all in one place, all under your control.
Now it’s time to add your actual content and expertise into the mix.
Step 5: Add Your Support Content & Tools
With the community hub built, this is where you’ll seamlessly add your resource library, Cursos MemberPresso CoachKit™.
Up to this point, we’ve built a fantastic, secure hub for your members to connect with each other. Now, it’s time to add the core “value” that only usted can provide: your content, your guidance, and your expertise.
This is how your site transforms from just a community forum into a complete support system.
The simplest way to start is by creating a “Resource Library.” Gracias a la MemberPress Access Rules we set up in Step 1, this is easy. You can create any number of private pages with:
- Support articles or blog posts
- Downloadable worksheets or guides
- A library of helpful videos
This is a great foundation. But what if you want to offer more structured, step-by-step guidance?
This is where I highly recommend an add-on called Cursos MemberPress. It’s a tool that’s built to work directly with MemberPress and lets you create professional, easy-to-follow online courses, complete with lessons and progress tracking.
For a support group, this is a perfect way to offer a “30-Day Welcome Program” or a “Foundations of Healing” course. The best part is that it’s all in one place. Your members can go from a discussion in ClubCircles™ to the next lesson in their course without ever leaving your site.
Finally, many support groups are led by a coach, mentor, or therapist. If you plan to offer one-on-one help, you’ll need a way to manage that.
For this, I recommend another tool called CoachKit™. It’s also designed to integrate perfectly with your MemberPress site. It gives you a central place to manage your coaching clients, set up milestones, handle appointments, and provide that personal, high-touch support – all from your WordPress dashboard.
This is how you create a truly unified system. Instead of having a course on one platform, a forum on another, and coaching on a third, everything lives under one roof.
Now, all that’s left is to set up the “front door” for people to join.
Here is the final step in our process, following all your guidelines.
Step 6: Define Your Membership & Signup Process
Okay, this is the most exciting part. We’ve built the private site (Step 1), added the community features (Steps 2 & 3), and loaded in your valuable content (Step 4).
Now, decide how you want people to join.
This is all handled right inside MemberPress. You’ll start by creating your “Membership.” This is the “package” or “level” that people will sign up for. For a support group, you have a lot of flexibility. For example, you could offer:
- A Free “Community Access” Level: This is a great option if your main goal is to build a large, supportive community funded by other means (like donations or one-on-one coaching).
- A Paid “All-Access” Level: This could be a monthly or annual subscription that gives members access to everything: the ClubCircles™ discussions, the ClubDirectory™ (Directorio de clubes), y su Cursos MemberPress.
- A “Tiered” Model: You could have a free level for just the discussion groups and a “Premium” level that adds your courses and CoachKit acceso.
The best part is that once you create a membership, MemberPress automatically does the heavy lifting for you.
It will generate a secure, private página de inscripción for that membership. This one page handles everything:
- It lets the new member create their username and contraseña.
- If it’s a paid membership, it securely collects their payment information (it works with Stripe, PayPal, etc.).
- It automatically creates their new user account.
All you have to in is put a “Join Now” button on your homepage that links directly to this new registration page. That’s it.
Your new, private, and secure support system is officially open.
What If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed?
I’ve just walked you through a lot of steps. And if you’re looking at this list and thinking, “This is exactly what I want, but I am no a technical person,” I want you to know that’s completely normal.
Your passion is (and should be!) running your support group and helping your members, not worrying about plugins, settings, and web design.
If that’s how you feel, please don’t let the technical side stop you from building your vision.
En MemberPress team offers a service called DFY (Done For You). It’s literally their in-house team of experts who have set up these exact kinds of sites hundreds of times. They can handle all the steps I just listed – from installing MemberPress y ClubSuite to setting up your courses and memberships.
The best part is that you can just talk to them about your idea for free. You can book a free consultation to show them your vision, ask questions, and get their advice on the best way to build it.
It’s a really helpful option that lets you get your new community home built derecha, so you can skip the technical headaches and get straight to what you do best.
Give Your Community the Home It Deserves
When I first started thinking about this topic, I kept coming back to one simple, key idea: your support group deserves a safe home.
For so long, we’ve had to try and build these safe spaces on platforms that were never designed to be safe. We’ve been piecing our communities together with disconnected tools, hosting our most vulnerable conversations on loud, public, and hostile social media feeds.
It’s time to stop doing that and start using tools that work (MemberPress + ClubSuite™).
With these tools, you can finally build it in a place you own, in a way that truly protects and serves your members.
Ahora I’m curious: What kind of support group are you dreaming of building? Please share your ideas or any questions you have in the comments below – I’d love to help if I can.
If you’re feeling inspired and ready to start building that true, private home for your members, the best place to start is by exploring MemberPress and the new ClubSuite complementos.
