A member who intentionally cancels after deciding your membership is no longer for them and one whose subscription lapses because of a failed payment have something in common: they’re no longer active members.
But winning them back calls for very different approaches.
The challenge is figuring out who left, why they left, and who you should reach out to first without spending hours digging through subscription records, transactions, and member data.
That’s where AI can help.
Mit MemberPress AI Foundation, you can connect an AI assistant such as Claude Desktop to your MemberPress-Standort and ask questions about your membership data in plain language. Instead of manually piecing together what happened, you can identify canceled subscriptions, investigate unresolved failed payments, and compare member Wert und Verlobung.
And with the right permissions enabled, AI can help you act on what you find, too – from creating a win-back coupon to managing a returning member’s subscription.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to use AI to find the lapsed members worth targeting, understand what may have caused them to leave, and take a more informed approach to winning them back.
Before You Start: Connect Your AI Client to MemberPress
To follow this guide, you’ll need the MemberPress AI Foundation add-on installed and active, along with a compatible AI client – the AI app you’ll use to interact with MemberPress, such as Claude Desktop.
If you only want to review and analyze your membership data, Nur Lesen access is enough.
For some of the tasks we’ll cover later, including creating coupons or resuming subscriptions, you’ll need to enable Voller Zugriff and grant the relevant write permissions.
You can manage these permissions under MemberPress > KI-Einstellungen > MCP-Einstellungen, then use the MCP-Einrichtungsassistent to connect your AI client. MemberPress lets you limit the connection to only the permissions it needs.

For the full connection process, follow our step-by-step guide to setting up Claude Desktop with MemberPress.
Step 1: Build a Clear List of Lapsed Members
Start by defining who you want to consider for your win-back campaign. Pulling every former member you’ve ever had could leave you sorting through years of records that are no longer useful.
A recent timeframe gives you a more manageable starting point:
List every member with a canceled or expired subscription in the last 90 days.”
Your AI assistant can work across your MemberPress subscription and transaction data to identify members who fit the request.

Ninety days isn’t a rule. A larger membership site might start with the past 30 days for a smaller, timely campaign, while a site with fewer cancellations could look back six months.
You can also ask for the details you’ll need later:
For each member, include their membership, cancellation or expiration date, and email address.”
This gives you a working list rather than a broad archive of former customers, with enough context to start figuring out what happened to each account.
Step 2: Separate Voluntary Cancellations From Failed Payments
Next, separate members who appear to have chosen to leave from those whose memberships ended after a payment problem.
Ask:
Which of my lapsed members canceled voluntarily, and which lapsed because of a failed payment?”
Then narrow in on unresolved payment issues:
Show me failed payments that were never resolved.”
AI Foundation can analyze failed transactions across a date range and break them down by membership or payment gateway, helping you identify members who may have dropped out because billing failed rather than because they wanted to leave.

That distinction changes the conversation.
A member with an unresolved payment may simply need help updating their billing details or restarting their subscription. MemberPress already allows members with a lapsed payment to update their payment information from their account page in supported payment setups.
Someone who deliberately canceled is more likely to need a reason to reconsider, such as a better-fit offer, a reminder of what has changed, or more personal outreach.
And if the available records don’t make the reason clear, don’t force the member into either category. Keep them in an unknown group until you have more information.
Step 3: Prioritize the Members Most Worth Winning Back
If your list is still fairly long, use MemberPress data to decide who should get your attention first.
Start with the members who had the strongest financial history:
Which lapsed members had the highest lifetime value before they canceled?”
For a member-level comparison, your AI assistant can review transaction history to see who generated the most revenue before leaving.
MemberPress also includes lifetime value analysis, which estimates subscription value and duration by membership.
You can look beyond revenue, too:
Were any of my lapsed members highly engaged right before they left?”
MemberPress’s engagement analysis can examine signals such as transaction frequency, subscription status, and recent activity.
That can give you another clue about where to focus, especially if someone appeared active shortly before their membership ended.

Then check whether cancellations are concentrated among people who joined around the same time:
Group my cancellations by signup month. Which cohort has the most lapsed members?”
Cohort analysis groups members by signup month and compares retention, cancellations, and revenue across those groups.
These signals don’t guarantee that someone will come back. They simply help you spend your time and win-back budget where there may be a stronger reason to reach out first.
From there, you can decide what kind of offer or outreach makes sense for each group.
Step 4: Choose the Right Way to Bring Each Group Back
Now you can use what you’ve learned to decide how to approach each group. A discount may work for some former members, but it won’t solve every reason a membership ended.
Zum Beispiel:
- Unresolved failed payments: Focus on helping the member fix their billing details or restart their subscription.
- Price-related cancellations: If feedback shows cost was the issue, a renewal discount could give them a reason to reconsider.
- Previously active or high-value members: More personal outreach may be appropriate, especially if you have something relevant to share, such as new content, benefits, or improvements since they left.
- Members who left before getting much value: An extended trial or short access extension could give them another chance to experience the membership.
Be careful not to treat account data as proof of someone’s motivation. A cancellation date, payment history, or short subscription period can give you useful context, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you why the member left.
If you collect cancellation feedback, use it alongside the MemberPress data you’ve gathered. And if you need more ideas for the campaign itself, see our guide to winning back lapsed members.
With an approach in mind, you can move from deciding what to offer to setting it up.
Step 5: Put Your Win-Back Plan in Place
Once you’ve chosen the right approach, your AI assistant can help with some of the MemberPress tasks involved in bringing a member back.
If you’re offering a discount, for example, try:
Create a 20% win-back coupon for my Pro Membership.”
You can specify the discount amount and the membership it should apply to, rather than creating a general coupon you’ll need to configure afterward.

For someone who’s ready to return, you can also ask:
Resume this member’s subscription.”
Resuming a subscription is treated differently from canceling or suspending one because it reverses a previous change. That means it can be completed without the additional confirmation step required for destructive operations.
You might also want to give a returning member a little extra time as an incentive:
Extend this returning member’s access by two weeks as a welcome-back gesture.”
In this case, the proposed change is previewed first so you can review it before approving it.

You Stay in Control of Changes
AI Foundation doesn’t give a connected assistant unlimited freedom to edit your site. Write permissions are granted separately, and changes are previewed before they’re made.
More sensitive operations, such as cancellations and refunds, have additional confirmation requirements. MemberPress also gives administrators a way to pause destructive writes if needed.
You can read more about these protections in the AI Foundation safety measures.
That gives you the convenience of handling routine win-back work through your AI assistant while keeping control over what actually changes on your site.
Step 6: Use What You Learn to Reduce Future Churn
The information you uncover during a win-back campaign can also point to areas of your membership that deserve a closer look.
Ask broader questions such as:
Which membership has the highest churn rate?”
How long do members typically stay before canceling?”
Which signup cohorts have the lowest retention?”
AI Foundation’s reporting tools can compare cancellation rates across memberships, calculate the average time before members cancel, and show retention and revenue by signup cohort.

Suppose one membership consistently loses people within the first few months.
That gives you a specific place to investigate: Is the onboarding experience setting the right expectations? Are members reaching the content or benefits they signed up for soon enough?
Or you may find that one signup cohort retained noticeably better than another. Comparing what changed between those periods – from your offer to your onboarding or member communication – could help you identify something worth testing again.
Treat these results as clues, not conclusions. The data can show you where something changed, but it won’t always explain why.
If the numbers point to a wider retention problem, our guide to Strategien zur Mitgliederbindung can help you decide what to improve next.
The aim is to leave the campaign with more than a list of people to contact: you should also have a better idea of where future cancellations may be preventable.
Make Every Win-Back Attempt More Informed
Winning back a lapsed member is never guaranteed. But you can make better decisions about who to contact, what to offer, and when it’s worth trying.
That’s the real advantage of using AI with MemberPress: instead of treating every former member as another name on the same email list, you can work from the information already available in your membership business and respond accordingly.
And when someone is ready to return, you’ve already done the work to make their next step easier.
