As your small business grows, you’ll find that you need employees to help you keep your business moving and increase cash flow. The people you add to your team can be either a blessing or a curse, and a lot of that can have to do with the effort you put into retaining them.
In this post, we’re going to give you a few key ways to retain excellent employees in your online business.
Don’t Rush the Hiring Process
The first, and arguably the most important, step in retaining employees in your business is to never rush into hiring people in the first place.
It can be hard to wait to find an employee because you just want to get the ball rolling. But never be in such a hurry that you hire the wrong person. Not only will it hurt your business, but you’ll eventually be forced to start the process all over again.
Taking the time needed to make sure you’re hiring the right person will save you more time in the long run.
Recognize and Reward Good Work
Another solid way to keep your employees coming back is to recognize your employees and reward them for the ways they’re helping your business grow.
You don’t have to wait for a significant accomplishment or milestone to recognize employees; even if it’s as simple as an employee always being affirmative and ready to work, that deserves praise. Make sure that your employees know that you care about and appreciate them.
Build A Connection
Building connections with your employees in your online business is extremely important, especially if your employees are primarily remote.
Take a second to learn about your team and find ways you can relate to them. Just take a moment to check in on them and see how they’re doing every so often. Buy them lunch or invite them out to lunch with you if you all work in the same office. It’s those little things that will make your staff appreciate you and like you even more.
Embrace Feedback and Opinions
No one wants to find themselves working under a tyrant, and no one wants to feel like they aren’t being heard.
Be sure to take your staff’s concerns and comments into consideration in your business. Why? They are working in the trenches for you day in and day out! They may see potential issues or current problems that you may not understand. Not only will your business benefit from it, but your employees will feel more confident and secure in sharing ideas and opinions with you, which can only make the company better.
Be Respectful
Everyone wants to be treated with respect, so this should be a no-brainer, right? Well, not always. It never hurts to be reminded every once in a while.
Consider your employees’ feelings. Don’t get us wrong, there are times when you do have to be stern with your staff and lay down the law, but there are also times when you can be a bit softer and more understanding. If you respect your team, they will return the favor, no questions asked.
Give Breaks
Your team works hard for you, so why wouldn’t you want to give them a nice break every once in a while? Allowing them to have off-days and vacations will help your employees to refresh their minds and come back stronger for your business.
Be sure to allow them holidays off, if they need to take a day off for an emergency, allow it. Sometimes if you just want to be kind, allow them to take a day off! Don’t let your employees take advantage of you, but never try to overwork them either. Your business will suffer for it.
Your employees will come and go every so often – that’s just part of owning a business. However, there are certain practices you can put into play to help you keep your employees for a longer time, and without a messy separation. If you keep our tips in mind, you will be sure to have happy and productive staff members that you can count on to stick with you and help you grow your online business!
