What is MemberPress in a nutshell?
MemberPress is a WordPress membership site plugin and LMS that makes it easy to charge your users for access to content and digital products such as software, e-books, and online courses you create.
MemberPress gives you the ability to confidently create, manage, and analyze membership subscriptions, online courses, and digital products. In addition to these powerful features, MemberPress allows you to grant and revoke access to posts, pages, categories, tags, feeds, communities, and digital files based on what products your users have purchased or subscribed to.
Since MemberPress is built on top of WordPress, you can create powerful and compelling membership sites that leverage all the tremendous features of WordPress and WordPress plugins, including content management, forums, and communities.
Why should I use MemberPress to build my membership site?
MemberPress has all the features you’d expect from a full-featured WordPress membership site plugin. But here are some of the things that really set the plugin apart:
- Quick & Easy Setup. We’ve put a great deal of thought into the set up of a membership site. It really shouldn’t be rocket science… and with MemberPress it isn’t. From the standard plugin installation to the automatically generated pricing pages, you’ll find that MemberPress really saves you time.
- Advanced Access Rules. MemberPress has an easy-to-use but advanced set of access rules. You can protect pages, posts, children of pages, posts that are categorized or tagged a certain way, feeds, custom post types, and even standalone files anywhere in your WordPress website folder.
- Customizable. We’ve really tried to make sure that MemberPress is easy to use and looks great right out of the box. And for our more advanced customers, we’ve added a large number of actions and filters. Also, we never encrypt or obfuscate our code, and we’re always willing to help our customers with customizations.
- Seamless Payment Gateway Integration. We’ve spent even more time working on making our payment gateway integration complete and easy for you to set up. When getting your payment gateway working with MemberPress, you won’t need to copy and paste code or go through any complex instructions to set things up. Instead, you just copy your gateway’s API keys into MemberPress, then copy any hashes or notification URLs into your gateway’s control panel… that’s it.
- Much, Much More. We’ve put a great deal of time and effort into providing you with a solid and simple user experience. So, if you’ve been frustrated getting membership sites set up in the past, prepare to be surprised by how easy it can be.

As such, the checkout process in MemberPress can be much simpler than what's used to purchase physical goods. MemberPress is also a master of recurring subscription payments. It’s been built from the ground up to specialize in subscriptions and to automatically grant or revoke access based on the current state of subscription payments.

Why is a yearly subscription required to purchase MemberPress?
Since businesses run on MemberPress, it’s critical that it always stay secure, up to date, and stable. When you buy MemberPress, you can use it for a year, but in order for us to continue providing you with a high level of support and regular updates, we require an automatic yearly renewal. Of course, regardless of whether you decide to renew, MemberPress will not lose any front-end functionality. To learn more about how letting your subscription expire could affect you, click here.
Will my membership site stop working if my license expires?
Ongoing MemberPress updates are absolutely critical to the security, performance, and overall success of your membership site. So if your license expires, you’ll be encouraged to renew MemberPress. Don’t worry, though. You’ll still be able to view and edit your members and export your data. Also, the front end of your membership site will still continue to work just fine as long as MemberPress is installed. However, don’t forget that our support team is always there to ensure you and your members are well taken care of as long as your license is current.
Can’t activate your license, or need to move your license to a new site?
If you can't activate your license because the usage limit has been reached, or if you want to deactivate your license on an old site and move it to a new site, please do the following:
- Head to your Account Page.
- Next to your License Key, click the Deactivate All button.
- Your License Key will be freed up, and you can now activate the license elsewhere.
Why is no “Complete” transaction recorded in MemberPress after the customer has paid?
If you’ve verified that your customer’s payment went through at the gateway, but you’re not seeing any completed record of that on MemberPress’ Transactions page, it could indicate a communication issue between MemberPress and your gateway. Most of the time the solution is to copy your IPN URL (PayPal), Webhook URL (Stripe), or MD5 Hash & Silent Post URL (Authorize.net) from MemberPress and paste it into your gateway account settings. If you’re confident that your gateway is configured properly, please submit a support ticket for further assistance from our support team.
Why are there errors next to my signup form fields?
Try heading to MemberPress > Options > General Tab > then enabling the Global CSS Styles option. Then clear your caches and check the signup forms again. If you still have the problem, please submit a support ticket on our Support page, and we’ll be happy to look into it further.
How do I handle customer credit cards that get reissued or updated? Or what happens if a customer needs to switch cards?
If the customer’s subscription is recurring, they'll see an update link option in their account page in MemberPress. Clicking that update link will allow them to enter their new card details. If their recurring subscription is through PayPal Express Checkout or Standard, they cannot update through MemberPress. They'll need to update via their PayPal account instead.
Why aren’t my customers receiving emails from MemberPress?
Not all web hosts are set up to deliver email out of the box from your WordPress installation. Luckily, you can connect your WordPress website to one of several different email services, such as ActiveCampaign or WP Mail SMTP, using their accompanying plugins. This should dramatically increase the deliverability of your emails. You can read more about membership email delivery on our blog. Failure to receive emails could also indicate an issue with your payment gateway setup. Be sure that you followed all the outlined steps for your payment gateway setup. You can access the instructions to integrate Authorize.net, PayPal, or Stripe in the MemberPress user manual.
Why won’t my changes stick when I save options?
Be sure that you’ve filled out the Info tab in MemberPress Options. There are some required business information fields on that tab that can be easy to overlook.
Why do my customers’ subscriptions appear to expire within a day?
MemberPress allows each new member a 24 hour grace period on recurring subscriptions. This gives the gateway time to set up the subscription on their end and process the first payment. Setup usually occurs almost immediately, but in some cases it can take up to 24 hours to complete (especially with Authorize.net). Without the grace period, the member would have to wait for setup to occur before they could access the protected content. If you'd prefer that your members wait, you can disable the grace period in MemberPress Options. If after 24 hours the subscription’s expiration date has not updated, there may be issues with your gateway setup or settings. Please be sure you followed the setup instructions for your gateway correctly. You can access the instructions to integrate Authorize.net, PayPal, or Stripe in the MemberPress user manual.
Your support videos say to click on a link called “Products,” but I can’t find it.
In MemberPress 1.2+ we changed the Products to be more aptly named Memberships. This will be updated in all our videos soon. But for now, know that when the video instructs you to click the Products link, look for and click the Memberships link instead.
