Creating Bundle IDs for MemberPress iOS Apps

Your app's Bundle ID uniquely identifies it within Apple's ecosystem, preventing conflicts and ensuring smooth distribution. By using reverse domain name notation and appending .test for your Test App, you keep production and testing builds distinct. This guide walks you through logging into your Apple Developer account, registering both your Release and Test App Bundle IDs, and enabling essential capabilities such as Push Notifications and Sign In with Apple.

Understanding Bundle IDs

Bundle IDs provide unique identification for iOS applications within Apple's ecosystem.

Unique identification prevents conflicts with other applications on the App Store and devices. Each app requires a distinct Bundle ID for proper distribution and installation.

Reverse domain notation follows the standard format, like com.company.appname. This naming convention ensures global uniqueness across all iOS applications.

Test and Release separation uses the .test suffix to distinguish testing builds from production versions. Separate Bundle IDs enable simultaneous installation of both build types on devices.

Capability association links app features like Push Notifications to specific Bundle IDs. Capabilities must be enabled during Bundle ID creation for proper functionality.

Permanent identification remains constant throughout the app lifecycle. Bundle IDs cannot be changed after initial App Store publication.

Creating Release App Bundle ID

Release App Bundle ID registration establishes the production app identifier in the Apple Developer account.

  1. Log in to your Apple Developer account with the Apple ID you used to enroll in the Apple Developer Program.
  2. Go to Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles.
  3. Select the Identifiers tab and click the + button.
  4. Choose App IDs and click Continue.
  5. Enter a Description, for example: “Release App”.
  6. Under Bundle ID, select Explicit and enter your chosen ID (e.g., com.color.yellow).
  7. In the Capabilities section, check:
    • Push Notifications;
    • Sign In with Apple.
  8. Click Register to save your Release App Bundle ID.

Creating Test App Bundle ID

Test App Bundle ID registration establishes a testing app identifier separate from production.

  1. Repeat steps 1-4 from the Release App section above.
  2. Enter a Description, for example: “Test App”.
  3. Under Bundle ID, select Explicit and enter com.color.yellow.test.
  4. In Capabilities, check:
    • Push Notifications;
    • Sign In with Apple.
  5. Click Register to save your Test App Bundle ID.
