“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” —Dr. Seuss
Reading a book on entrepreneurship is like sitting down for a seven-hour chat with an expert on how to make it in the business world. While reading a blog article or watching a YouTube can be empowering, books have been vetted among hundreds of other options and require years of effort to create and a team of people besides the author. And conferences get pricey (though they are good for networking purposes).
Setting a goal to read a few books every month can literally change how you approach your online business—and for only a few dollars.
We know you’re busy, so we thought we keep it simple and suggest three must-reads! Collectively, these books cover the basics of online entrepreneurship. Without further ado, here are three books we highly recommend:
Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller
About the author: Donald Miller is the CEO of StoryBrand, a business that specializes in helping other businesses clean up their brand. He is a New York Times best-selling novelist.
About the book: The book breaks down a story structure commonly used by writers and teaches you how to take your website, brand, and social platforms and create a specific story that appeals to your users.
What you’ll learn: You’ll learn how to clarify your brand and how to improve your website and all the other content you might create. You’ll know what info to cut from your site and content to keep your design simple and to clarify your message, and you’ll know what should be added to improve your brand. Miller helps you differentiate between content only your company cares about and content that actually matters to the consumer.
Why this is a must-read: While hiring Miller would cost a bundle, reading his book is affordable and a close second to benefitting from his expertise in person. Building a Story Brand teaches you how to create better content without the expense. Many marketing specialists take a similar approach to marketing, which is important to know, but Miller’s background as an author gives him an edge over the competition. He combines two skills he’s an expert in and gives you a rich approach to creating content.
The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki
About the author: Guy Kawasaki’s client list includes companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Nike. He’s been a brand ambassador, chief adviser, angel investor, and business owner. He’s helped big businesses become even bigger.
About the book: This book teaches you how to grow your business through a variety of social platforms.
What you’ll learn: You’ll learn best practices for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, blogs, etc. You’ll also learn how to create great posts and how to get those posts seen. Kawasaki goes through how to appropriately respond to commenters. He teaches you about hashtags, socializing events, and more. You’ll also learn how to grow your list of followers.
Why this book is a must-read: Kawasaki’s accolades aside, his book speaks for itself and has been recommended by business entrepreneur Ken Krogue, founder of InsideSales. It’s invaluable for those with little social media expertise yet beneficial to those with a lot of social media know-how. In today’s digital world, social media is one of the best ways to advertise and grow your online business. Follow the principles taught in The Art of Social Media and you’ll be able to run successful social sites.
The Power of Starting Something Stupid by Richie Norton
About the author: Richie Norton is an international business consultant and founder of a variety of successful businesses.
About the book: This book teaches you how to overcome various roadblocks to success.
What you’ll learn: You’ll learn about what’s keeping you from experiencing success and about the excuses people use to hinder their own dreams. And there are a lot of stories about entrepreneurs who’ve made it big. You’ll receive tools to increase productivity and models for goal setting.
Why this book is a must-read: You’re going to fail, not everyone will believe in your ability to succeed, and sometimes you’ll get down on yourself. Norton gets it and wants you to find the confidence to succeed. This book has helped us dare to try; we think it will help you as well. It’s chock-full of good ideas to increase your productivity. (Another great read is Steven Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which we recommend if you haven’t read it already.)
Reading these books is a great way to steal tricks from the best entrepreneurs in the world without actually stealing from them. You get access to well-thought-out information for only a few dollars.
Take advantage of these three books and up your approach to online entrepreneurship.
