• A note on keeping your plugin stack lean: Every plugin you add is a potential conflict with another plugin, a performance cost, and a security surface. Before installing anything, ask whether it solves a problem you actually have right now – not one you might have eventually. Start with what you need to launch. Add more only when a specific gap appears.

Step 6: Don’t Launch Until Payments Are Working

Before any member hits your checkout page, payments need to work perfectly. This is the one area where a mistake has immediate, real consequences.

MemberPress supports Stripe, PayPal, Square, and many more payment gateways. Stripe is the recommended default – it handles recurring subscriptions cleanly, supports most card types, and has a straightforward checkout experience for members. To connect a gateway, go to MemberPress > Settings > Payments > Add Payment Method and follow the connection steps for your chosen gateway.

Set up your first membership tier:

1. Go to MemberPress > Memberships > Add New
2. Name your membership (e.g., “Business Coaching – Monthly”)
3. Set your price and billing type (recurring monthly, annual, or one-time)
4. Under the Permissions tab, set who can sign up
5. Under the Price Box tab, configure what appears on your pricing page
6. Publish the membership

Run a test transaction before you launch. Create a test membership priced at $0.01, sign up as a test user, and confirm the full checkout flow works – payment processes, the Thank You page loads, the welcome email sends, and content access unlocks correctly.
